The Department of Classics at the University of Reading invites applications for a funded PhD studentship on any project within the fields (broadly interpreted) of Roman History and/or Latin Language and Literature, and within the time period of 753 BC to AD 600.

The studentship provides fees at the Home rate, plus a stipend (living allowance, normally tax free) of £20,780 per annum.

The closing date is 2 May 2025

It is strongly recommended that candidates view the Department’s website and staff profiles before submitting an application. Applicants are welcome, if they wish, to make contact with possible supervisors before submitting an application.

Further information, and how to apply, is available here.

The studentship is made possible by a generous bequest by Professor Jane Gardner (1934-2023). Jane, who served in the Department of Classics at Reading from 1966 to 1999, was an eminent scholar of Roman law and society, and author of seminal works including Women in Roman Law and Society (Routledge 1986), Being a Roman Citizen (Routledge 1993), and Family and Familia in Roman Law and Life (OUP 1998). After retirement she continued to play an active role in the Classics community at Reading.

Enquiries about the studentship can be addressed to the Director of Postgraduate Research, Prof. Timothy Duff.
